The Challenge

Shopping and financial app prototype that was disjointed with confusing navigation, unclear entity relationships, bloated features, and inconsistent messaging.

The Solution

A lean product with clear navigation, features that clearly communicated their value proposition to the user, and messaging that instilled trust and loyalty.

The Result

A fun, intuitive app that spoke specifically to the socially aware, environmentally conscious, wellness-oriented millennial who wants to make the world a better place.

A clear value proposition, well-communicated navigation and intentions, and effective design and interaction patterns, are all part and parcel of a good user experience.

Show, don't tell, the user how you will add value to their lives.

We needed to understand the Avo user. It's what's inside that counts; the user's thoughts and feelings, and how those affect the actions they take and the decisions they make. Exercises were conducted to determine who the Avo user was/was not, so we could better determine what their values were.

A map feature, with filters based on retail category as well as distance, would help users locate retailers to their desired specifications. Merchants would have a detailed page explaining the Avo values they embodied, such as fair labor or green energy.

A mission of community responsibility expressed in clean design, a lean and mean MVP, and promises of more in the future.

The app would also encourage financial responsibility by breaking down the user's spending habits on a month-to-month basis. Users loaded the app with money, similar to a Starbucks card, which they could then use like a debit or credit card, and users could also earn points at featured retailers, which at a certain threshold would earn them money back. This introduced users slowly to the eventual goal of the business: a credit union focused on sustainability and social responsibility.

The Results

A fun, intuitive app that spoke specifically to the socially aware, environmentally conscious, wellness-oriented millennial who wants to make the world a better place.

The final MVP was lean, but still quite ambitious - a financial app that helped users track their purchases to encourage responsible spending and rewarded them for supporting businesses with Avo values.
